Devdas Devdas is a 1955 Indian Hindi period drama film directed by Bimal Roy and based on the novel Devdas by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay. It was one of the best films ever made in Indian cinema, starring Dilip Kumar, Suchitra Sen, and Vyjayanthimala.
Devdas is a young man from a Minor Zamindar Bengali family in India in the early 1900s, set against the backdrop of rural Bengal during feudal times. Paro, alias Parvati, is a young Bengali Brahmin woman from a middle-class Bengali Brahmin family with a little lower prosperity, and status. Devdas and Paro had been childhood sweethearts, but their families forbade them from marrying. Devdas hesitated to move on because Paro was married to an older man. Chunni Babu, Devdas' carousing buddy in Calcutta, introduces him to Chandramukhi, a courtesan. At Chandramukhi's, Devdas begins to drink heavily, but the courtesan falls in love with him and looks after him. His health deteriorates as a result of a mixture of binge drinking and dissatisfaction with life; a delayed type of suicide. Devdas comes to meet Paro, sensing his impending death, to fulfil a pledge he made to see her before he died. On a dark, frigid night, he dies at her doorstep. When Paro learns of Devdas' death, she rushes to the door, disregarding "purdah," but her family members prevent her from leaving.
