For the next two months, the police will conduct a thorough background check. The applicant's family and neighbors are interviewed, and other factors such as health and behavior are evaluated. The recordings are then forwarded to the crime department and the National Crime Record Branch. Following that, the applicant is interviewed by licensing authorities, and approval or denial is communicated.
Approved applicants must attend a mandatory "arms handling" course in which they will be taught how to safely handle, fire, and transport firearms.
Every three years, the license must be renewed. Because the right to possess arms in India is "only a privilege, not a right," the government has the authority to seize such weapons at any time.
